Description

Ingres and Théodore Chassériau executed these lithographs to reproduce and publicize important pictures they had previously painted. However, the lithographs also represent experimentation with an unfamiliar medium, but both artists' assured draftsmanship make the prints successful.
A vertically oriented grayscale lithograph depicts a nude woman with a light skin tone standing center on a rocky shore. Facing our left with her eyes downcast, she raises both arms to gather her long, flowing hair. She stands with her legs crossed. Shells lie in the foreground. Behind her, the sea stretches toward the horizon on our right, and craggy cliffs rise to our left.
