Did You Know?

The last remaining historic marketplace in Cleveland is the West Side Market, which opened in 1912.

Description

This outdoor market scene depicts neither the characteristic fresh wares of a new day nor the excitement of a busy setting. Refuse litters the foreground, and figures, most with their backs to the viewer, are enveloped by the darkness of the stall. The ambiguous variety of items within and around the stall suggests that it could have housed furniture or secondhand goods. Edwin Kaufman titled this print “No. 1” and therefore may have intended to juxtapose this work against another scene.
A vertically oriented black-and-white etching depicts a marketplace beneath a building overhang. Large fabric awnings frame a dark, shadowed interior where figures with light skin tones work. On the left, a figure stands beside a large wooden wheel. Baskets and bundles are scattered across the foreground. Heavy hatching creates contrast between the shadowed stall and light background. Text at bottom right reads "KAUFMAN 1920" with a signature in the margin below.
