Description

Before refrigeration was widely accessible, produce was bought and sold fresh daily. Here, Edwin Kaufman appears to depict the beginning of the market day. Vendors arrange their wares on tables while a man rests on a crate in the center, perhaps taking a break from the work. The scene lacks the rush of midday shopping, gesturing instead toward the daily repeated tasks of the marketplace. The lack of contemporary elements contributes a sense of timelessness to the scene.
A vertically oriented etching in dense, squiggly black lines on beige paper depicts a market scene. In the foreground, a seated man in a hat faces right near an empty box and a figure standing by a wooden cart. Behind them, people gather beneath heavy, draped awnings that create deep shadows. Lines suggest windows in background buildings. "Market Place - No. 2" and "Edwin Kaufman" are inscribed below, with "KAUFMAN" in the lower right corner.
