Did You Know?

Kaufman continued to create scenes of everyday life during his 1929 studies in Europe, and they appeared in the Cleveland News several times upon his return.

Description

In this image, two laborers are at work, but beyond the few hints of windows on either side of the figures, the location remains unidentifiable. The lack of a defined setting in this print is unusual in Edwin Kaufman’s work, which usually includes landscapes that extend to the margins of his plate. The dominating blank space here emphasizes the action of the laborers and the bulk of their cart.
A vertically oriented drypoint print on off-white paper depicts a worker loading hay onto a spoked wagon. In the center, a figure bends over rectangular bales atop the vehicle. To our right, more bales rest on the ground. Behind, a shadowy doorway reveals a second figure. Sketchy, dark lines and heavy shading create contrast against the paper. Handwritten text appears in the bottom margin, identifying the work.
