Did You Know?

Cleveland’s skyscraper boom in the late 1920s insulated the city from the impact of the Great Depression for a few months, continuing to provide jobs for people until late 1930.

Description

Edwin Kaufman’s depiction of the skyline of Cleveland allows viewers to imagine the city as it was in 1926. The artist foregrounded the shadowy string of factories and warehouses along the waterfront, relegating the towering hotels and offices to the background. This layering reveals the dual nature of Cleveland during the first half of the 20th century as an urban center founded on industry.
A horizontally oriented black ink print on beige paper depicts a silhouetted skyline across water. Dark, boxy buildings and industrial chimneys rise from the center, casting long vertical reflections. Fine, sketchy horizontal lines fill the hazy sky and water to create a grainy texture. A handwritten fraction sits in the lower left margin, while "Edwin Kaufman" signs the lower right.
