Did You Know?

The Buddhist sculptures in the upper left corner of this print represent Fudo Myoo flanked by two child deities called Seitaka and Kongara.

Description

This print is the right-hand sheet from a triptych depicting a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site in what is now Gunma prefecture. The women in the foreground observe men undergoing ritual purification by standing under a sacred waterfall. The full composition showed eight women and a child traversing a bridge before a panorama of the religious site.
A vertical woodblock print depicts two women in patterned pink and green robes strolling toward our right, a child in a checkered robe between them looking upward. Behind a wooden railing, figures bathe in a waterfall against craggy green cliffs interspersed with pine trees. A shrine sits atop the mountain at our upper left, while an inscription box fills the upper right. Muted tones and bold outlines stylize the scene, guiding the eye across.
