Description

Giunta di Tugio was the most important maiolica ceramist of his time in Florence. Di Tugio was trained in his father's workshop, which he took over following his father's death around 1419, managing it for the next thirty years. According to documents, by 1417 di Tugio was a member of the council of oliandoli, or oil merchants.
A tin-glazed earthenware vessel with a bulbous body and wide neck features deep blue designs over a cream surface. Curved handles flank each side. A large fleur-de-lys centers the body, surrounded by stylized dark blue leaves and thin brown vines. A jagged pattern circles the neck. The smooth, glazed surface shows chips and wear around the rim and base, revealing the aged ceramic underneath.
