Description

King Francis I’s deep interest in Italian Renaissance culture manifested itself not only through acquiring important works of art but also by bringing leading architects, scholars, and artists to Paris. Chief among these figures was the Florentine painter Andrea del Sarto. The sitter’s distinctively French hood and black veil suggest that someone talented closely connected to the artist painted this work during his brief time in France.
A vertical oil painting depicts a woman with light skin tone and brown hair. Facing our left against a dark green background, she wears a black dress with a square neckline and red-ribbed sleeves ending in white ruffles. Voluminous white and gray drapery wraps her arms. Her hands are joined at her waist, holding a small scroll. She wears a dark headpiece, a gold ring, and a thin gold necklace.
