Description

The extremely free handling of this composition, reminiscent of prints by Pissarro or Corot (both also in this exhibition), suggests that Twachtman made the etching from nature.
A vertically oriented black ink etching on off-white paper depicts a landscape with scratchy lines. A dark path winds from the textured foreground toward a distant horizon, guiding the eye upward. On the right, a cottage with a thick roof rests beneath a large tree rendered with diagonal hatching. To the left, tall, spindly trees stand against the sky. Varying line weights and overlapping strokes create deep shadows, lending the scene a somber quality.
