Description

Scholars continue to debate the identity of this artist and the original source of the painting. The small coat of arms and initials at the bottom have not yet been identified. The arms may refer to a family, a city, or a bishopric. The style seems to relate to Bruges painting of the early 1500s, however the slightly mannered treatment of the child may point to Antwerp.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a woman with light skin and long, wavy reddish hair holding a nude child beneath an intricately carved, brown wooden canopy. She wears a dark teal cloak over a deep red dress. To the right, a kneeling winged angel in gold and white robes holds an open book toward the child. They stand on a geometric tiled floor before a green landscape with buildings and blue mountains.
