Description

Joseph Joachim, a Hungarian violinist, conductor, and composer, was widely regarded as one of the most significant violinists of the 19th century. A protégé of Felix Mendelssohn, Joachim later served Franz Liszt as concertmaster. He was a close friend of Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann, and frequently performed with Clara Schumann.
A vertically oriented etching in black ink on cream paper depicts Dr. Joachim from the waist up, facing forward. His full beard and mustache are rendered with dense, dark hatching, contrasting with the sparse lines of his light jacket and dark bow tie. He holds a violin horizontally in the foreground. The composition emphasizes his textured face against the plain background. The artist's name, W. Strang, is printed at the lower right.
