A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a man with a light skin tone, dark, wavy hair, and flushed cheeks. He turns slightly to our right, wearing a black coat over a white waistcoat fastened with gold and silver pins and a high black neckcloth. His left hand, captured in precise brushstrokes, rests on a dark surface beside white papers. He emerges from a mottled, shadowy background of dark brown and gray.
