Description

This print was published in Le Charivari (June 17, 1854) as plate 71 from the series News of the Day.
A horizontally oriented black ink lithograph on off-white paper depicts several figures. Furthest left, a large soldier stands in profile with hands clasped, wearing a cuirass, long sword, and bird-crested helmet. Next, to our right, four smaller men retreat; two carry sacks marked with numbers. Sketchy hatch marks create shadows across the ground. Finally, French text and the initials "h.D." are positioned at the bottom of the composition.
