Description

This print was published in Le Charivari (April 24, 1872) as plate 77 from the series News of the Day.
A vertically oriented black-inked lithograph on cream paper features the series title "ACTUALITÉS" above a large, open book titled "COMMISSION D'ENQUETE". From our left, a hand with a light skin tone uses a quill to draw dense, heavy horizontal scribbles, obscuring the text. Dark hatching and layered lines define the book and background stacks. Below, the caption reads: "Pas étonnant que ce soit long avec tant de ratures que ça."

It is not surprising that it is long with so many corrections.
