Description

Cizhou ware characteristically shows the use of slip coating, bold designs, and color contrasts to achieve stunning visual effects. This extremely rare and handsome vase is distinguished by its remarkable rhythmic execution of the floral designs achieved by the use of incised and slip-inlaid decoration. With firing, the slip coating and inlaid decoration assumed a soft ivory color whereas the exposed clay body displayed a warm cinnamon brown.
A stoneware dish-mouthed vase features a slender neck rising from an ovoid body. Cream-colored slip covers the vessel, with a tan-pigmented central section revealing intricate white sgraffito designs. Spiraling peony scrolls wrap around the midsection, while simplified foliate patterns adorn the shoulder and lower bands. The vessel's flared rim and foot remain smooth and pale. Fine, incised lines define the swirling floral motifs, which contrast sharply against the earth-toned, matte background.
