Did You Know?

French King Louis XV was a great patron of the decorative arts; he acquired the Sèvres Porcelain Factory in 1759.

Description

This tureen’s striking green background, or fond vert, was a major advancement for the Sèvres Porcelain Factory, known for their innovation in and mastery of color. Traditionally the largest, most expensive item in an 18th-century French dinner service, this tureen was part of a porcelain dining set presented to King Frederick V of Denmark by French King Louis XV in 1758.
A soft-paste porcelain vessel features a bulbous body on four scrolling gold feet and a domed lid topped with a sculpted orange. Against a vibrant green ground, ornate gilded scrollwork frames white panels. A central reserve depicts two winged cherubs reclining among clouds. To the left and right, white and gold handles curve outward. The orange finial is nestled in green leaves above a smaller panel painted with musical instruments.
