Description

A surimono is a privately commissioned print used to announce or commemorate a special event. Because the chrysanthemum is the premier symbol of autumn, this print may have been made to celebrate the changing of the seasons.
A horizontally oriented color woodblock print depicts a woven green basket filled with tan mushrooms against a cream background. Behind the basket, a fan-shaped panel features columns of black calligraphy. Pink, yellow, and white chrysanthemums sprout around the central objects. In the lower left, a large yellow and white flower with dark-green leaves anchors the scene, its white petals textured with embossing and yellow center bleeding into the petals.
