Did You Know?

The CMA owns another version of this chiaroscuro woodcut, which differs in the color of the ink used to print it (1960.19).

Description

Printed from four blocks in light blue, green, and black, this chiaroscuro woodcut shows the Virgin and Child flanked by the infant St. John the Baptist and St. Francis at right. St. Catherine of Siena takes a place on the left and holds a flower.
A vertically oriented woodblock print in muted greens and teals depicts the Virgin Mary holding the nude Child Christ, all with light skin tones. Mary gazes down as Christ stands on her lap. A hooded St. Catherine of Siena and bearded St. Francis flank them, while a small Saint John looks up from below. Dense, stylized hatching defines the figures and draped clothing. Block text appears in the upper left corner.
