Description

By 1509 color prints were successfully produced by printing the line block in black but using a second block to print the background color. Unprinted areas of white paper formed the highlights. Wechtlin’s The Knight and Lansquenet is a beautiful example of this technique.
A vertically oriented chiaroscuro woodcut in blue and black ink depicts a knight in elaborate armor riding a horse facing left. Both the knight's helmet and the horse's head are topped with massive, feathery plumes. A squire walks alongside carrying a long-handled weapon over his shoulder. They travel through a dense, detailed forest. In the lower-left foreground, a small framed plaque depicting crossed weapons lies on the ground.
