Description

Bellows achieved fame as a young man for his powerful boxing scenes and images of urban life, but he also produced sensitive drawings and paintings of women. Bellows married Emma Story in 1910.
A vertically oriented black lithographic drawing on light paper depicts a nude woman seated on a draped surface. Facing forward, she turns her head to our left, one leg extending down and the other tucked beneath her. She braces herself with an arm behind. Dense, dark vertical hatching fills the background, while soft shading and light highlights define her pale skin. Strong lines outline her form, contrasting with the scratchy, textured backdrop.
