Did You Know?

Established in 1881, the Cafe Wepler is still in business. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was frequented by artists and writers.

Description

The Wepler, a large brasserie restaurant on Place Clichy in the Montmartre district of Paris, is composed of several rooms on different levels. Once frequented by bohemian artists like Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani, the Wepler is still in business today.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a grand cafe filled with people of light skin tones. In the foreground, white-clothed tables and dark chairs are scattered across the floor. In the center, a person in a white uniform stands facing our right. Behind them, rows of blurred patrons sit beneath three large, golden arches. Thick brushwork and a palette of muted yellows, creams, and deep purples define the warm, expansive interior.
