Description

Wedgwood's tricolor jasperware first became popular in the 1770s during a period of fascination with neoclassical decoration. This vase was probably made around 1850 during the period when this type of decoration was revived. The relief medallions depict two versions of the Greek god Apollo, the god of music, next to his harp or lyre.
This circular light blue jasperware cover features a central spherical knob encircled by a pointed petal ring. Radiating outward is a symmetrical relief pattern of alternating motifs: arched frames containing delicate flowers and leaves, and slender stems topped by lily-like blossoms. The matte finish of the blue ground highlights the crisp white floral details that repeat around the entire surface, reflecting a balanced Neoclassical aesthetic.
