Did You Know?

Despite living in close quarters, Vuillard’s mother was known to warmly host and cook for her son’s Nabi friends.

Description

The artist’s mother was known for her hospitality toward her son’s Nabi friends, who occasionally dined in the Vuillards’ apartment. Madame Vuillard reigned in the kitchen, but here, the artist depicts her as diminutive and frozen, part of the still life of objects and patterns of the room.
A vertically oriented color lithograph depicts a seated woman from an elevated angle, her silver-haired head bowed. She wears a patterned blue blouse and a voluminous white apron, her hands busy in her lap. To our left, a dark bottle rests on a shelf against tan cabinets. To our right, stacked pots and flat, tan circular shapes sit on a white counter above a floor patterned with blue and white diamonds.
