Did You Know?

The muses for this print, Misia Natanson and Marthe Mellot, were accomplished in their own right. Natanson was a pianist and patron of the arts, while Mellot was a film actress.

Description

In this hushed lithograph, Misia Natanson, Vuillard’s artistic muse, enjoys an intimate conversation with her sister-in-law, actress Marthe Mellot. The two women lean against a piano, an instrument that Misia played brilliantly.
A vertically oriented color lithograph depicts two people with light skin tones leaning over a dark table. On the right, a woman in a solid black dress bends low. To the left, a woman in a red-speckled white dress faces away. Behind them, a white lamp stands against a bright yellow wall with swirling green patterns. A small dog rests at the bottom left, and a green patch fills the bottom right corner.
