Did You Know?

Vuillard sought assistance from master printer Auguste Clot to tackle the technical difficulty of using many colors in a single print.

Description

In this small view of a Parisian avenue, city dwellers of various classes coexist, as a fashionably dressed woman is about to cross paths with a man carrying a heavy burden on his shoulders. The city street provides a microcosm of the capital.
A horizontally oriented color lithograph on tan paper depicts a wide avenue populated by figures. On our right, a woman stands with her back to us, wearing a pale yellow shawl and a voluminous, dark blue skirt. Behind her, a person carries a large bundle atop their head. To our left, several figures walk amidst muted green rectangles and wavy foreground lines. In the distance, a cluster of bright green trees sits toward the left.
