Did You Know?

Shitao was a Buddhist monk, painter, and calligrapher in the early Qing dynasty.
An ink painting on a horizontal paper handscroll features clusters of orchids and bamboo. Chinese calligraphy arranged in vertical columns occupies our far left. In the center, long, arching orchid leaves and pointed bamboo leaves sprout from textured, rounded rocks. At our far right, four large, bold characters appear in thick black ink. The monochromatic composition uses varied brushwork against aged, cream-colored paper, ranging from fine lines to dark, heavy strokes.
