Did You Know?

The Csonkatemplom originally had a large domed helmet, but it was destroyed in the early 1900s by a windstorm and never rebuilt.

Description

Locally known as the Csonkatemplom, the Debrecen Reformed Church was first constructed in the late 17th century and remodeled in the 1870s. Kubinyi created this image when he visited his uncle in Hungary to learn new printmaking techniques. The artist includes a calm street scene below the church tower: a small figure, perhaps a child, sits outside a shop front while a worker sweeps the street. Free of automobiles and trains, the image conveys a sense of nostalgia.
A vertically oriented, black-and-white lithograph with rough, expressive strokes depicts a street scene. Center, a tall, square clock tower with corner turrets rises behind a leafy tree. To the right, a building with a gabled roof and hanging sign recedes. A dark mass of foliage lines the left edge. In the light foreground, sparse, dark marks suggest figures. A signature and edition number appear at the bottom.
