Description

Mink Pond was Homer’s favorite haunt in the Adirondacks. With a subtle range of smoky blue washes, the artist conveyed the grandeur of the mountains and a stormy sky towering above a diminutive canoe with a casting fisherman. Small breaks of brightness provide moments of relief in the monochromatic tonality of the whole.
A horizontally oriented watercolor with layered washes depicts an expansive sky of gray and tan clouds. A dark blue-gray mountain slopes toward the right across the middle ground. In the lower center, loose brushstrokes form a small boat with two figures on a calm lake. Pale tan reflections shimmer on the water's surface, mirroring the hazy sky. A signature and the date 1892 appear at the bottom right.
