Though pears mature on the tree, they ripen best after being plucked.

Description

Pomona Britannica illustrates fruits cultivated at Hampton Court Palace’s gardens, the most celebrated around London. It was devoted to the most handsome varieties of fruit cultivated in England. Most of the 90 plates in this large and sumptuous book, like these, have dark aquatint backgrounds.
A vertically oriented aquatint print in brown, green, red, and yellow depicts three pears and leaves emerging from a shadowy background. At top center, a mottled brown pear hangs from a gnarled branch. Below on the left, a yellow pear with a red blush tapers toward its stem. To the right, a large, textured green pear hangs from a separate branch. A small text box at the bottom identifies the work as PLATE LXXXII.
