Description

Edwards was one of the best botanical draftsmen of the 18th century. Large Double China Aster is from a superb and extremely rare book with 77 plates illustrating a variety of beautiful flowers. The coloring is particularly fine owing to the use of pale printer’s ink that does not interfere with the delicacy of the watercolor.
A vertically oriented hand-colored etching depicts a flowering plant centered within a white oval against a textured gray background. A large, pale pink bloom with a yellow center sits atop a stem, while a blue and purple flower blooms below to the left. Dark green, jagged leaves and several small buds sprout from the central stalk. Small cursive text at the bottom reads, "Large double China Aster."
