Description

Through portraits of rural workers including fishermen and farmers, Max Pechstein explored his interest in people whom he perceived as rugged and natural. Here, he capitalized on the rough-hewn character of the wood to enhance the fisherman’s strong features, using a gouge and cutting along the grain without any preparatory drawing. The result is a frank and immediate presentation of a wizened face that reveals years of arduous work at sea.
A vertically oriented woodcut print in black ink depicts a man's stylized face. Thick, angular lines define a furrowed brow and heavy-lidded eyes gazing downward. The head tapers from a wide forehead, creased with horizontal cuts, to a chin covered by a vertically textured white beard. Stark, carved shapes frame the face against a solid black background, with initials marking the corners of this bold, high-contrast composition.
