Description

People crowding the Ryōgoku Bridge over the Sumida River and those aboard party boats below enjoy summer fireworks. Among a group gathered on the riverbank a little boy stands holding his caged pet cricket in one hand, and a young woman’s hand in the other. At left, a boy with a lantern advertising the name of the restaurant for which he works, “Ōnoshi,” guides two women away.
A woodblock print depicts three figures standing before a river. On the left, a girl carries a paper lantern. Beside her, two women wear kimonos with intricate floral and geometric patterns. One looks right while the other touches her face. Behind them, a bridge crowded with people spans a dark river filled with lantern-lit boats. Calligraphy appears on the right. The figures have black hair and pale skin against the muted, textured paper.
