Did You Know?

The hunched monster has three-fingered hands, four square teeth in center of its mouth, and two pairs of pointed teeth on either side.

Description

This kneeling monster from the cave-temple complex at Xiangtangshan was originally placed below some wall niches on the perimeter. With its grotesque face and body, it is among the most imaginative sculptures of the period.
A tan and gray limestone sculpture fragment depicts a winged creature kneeling forward. Its face has flared nostrils, a wide mouth with two flat teeth, and heavy brow ridges. Large wings with carved swirling patterns rise from behind the shoulders. Below, the figure has small breasts and a rounded belly, with thick arms resting on wide knees. The stone has a rough, weathered surface, and parts of the top and sides are broken away.
