Description

William Merritt Chase painted several small harbor scenes, like Marine, whose sparse compositions were unusual for their day. Discussing these works, one baffled critic complained, "they rarely contain enough to make frames worth while."
A horizontally oriented oil painting with thick, layered brushstrokes creates a textured seascape in muted gray, tan, and pale blue. Near the center, a blurred horizon line features small dark shapes of boats. Toward the right, a single vertical tan stroke suggests a sail. In the lower left corner, a blue signature is visible. The horizontal application of paint creates a hazy, atmospheric scene that blends sky and water together.
