Description

These two Ming imperial wares [CMA 1957.60 and CMA 1957.61] are among the smallest, but most precious, of the museum's holdings in Chinese ceramics. The luminous glaze, gestural freedom, and vibrant color are perfectly unified to fit the delicate shapes of these luxury items.
A white porcelain vessel features a wide, flared bowl atop a tall, tapering stem. Swirling dark blue lines depicting water cover the surface. Red mythical beasts with four legs leap through the waves around the bowl, and red fish swim within the blue patterns on the stem. Fine blue lines encircle the rim and base. A polished glaze creates a smooth, reflective surface over the red and blue decorations.
