Description

Les Roses was commissioned by the empress Josephine who, after marrying Napoleon Bonaparte in 1795, rebuilt the royal country estate Malmaison and its opulent gardens. An immense hothouse was constructed to shelter her magnificent collection of rare and exotic plants, which included 250 varieties of roses.
A vertical watercolor depicts a rose branch with curved pink thorns against an off-white background. Clusters of green serrated leaves sprout from a central stem that grows upward to two white, five-petaled flowers with pink-tinged edges and yellow centers at the top and right. A small pink bud extends from a leftward branch. Cursive text is inscribed in the lower left corner, anchoring the naturalistic botanical study.
