Description

The bold, simplified style of Vallotton's more than 200 woodcuts made him a central figure in the late 19th-century revival of the medium. With stylized forms and striking contrasts of black and white, Vallotton effectively depicted the personality of each poker player and the brightly lit candelabra in the otherwise darkened room.
A horizontally oriented woodcut print in black ink depicts five people in stark silhouette gathered around a circular table. In the foreground, a figure sits with their back toward us, while a man in profile studies cards on the left. A bearded man stares from the center as two three-candle candelabras illuminate the white tabletop. Flat black fills the background, and labels "LE POKER" and "FV" mark the bottom corners.
