Description

Born in Holland, Ten Cate spent most of his career in Paris where he briefly shared an apartment in Montmartre with his friend the artist Kees van Dongen, and was also acquainted with Vincent van Gogh. He was known for his pastels of harbors and cityscapes. This melancholic view of Le Havre conveys the damp chill of an autumn twilight.
A horizontally oriented pastel drawing with chalky, muted gray and brown strokes depicts a hazy harbor. Tall buildings on the left overlook a wet quay where blurred figures, including a blue-coated shape, walk toward the viewer. To the right, dark masses and spindly lines represent ships in the water. Loose strokes form an overcast sky. In the lower right corner, handwritten text reads ten Cate Havre 1901.
