Did You Know?

The CMA owns another version of this chiaroscuro woodcut, which differs in the color of the ink used to print it (1949.81).

Description

Printed from four blocks in brown, this chiaroscuro woodcut shows the Virgin and Child flanked by the infant Saint John the Baptist and Saint Francis at right. Saint Catherine of Siena takes place on the left, and holds a flower.
A vertically oriented chiaroscuro woodblock print in brown and tan tones depicts the Virgin Mary holding the nude Christ child, all with light skin tones. Flanked by Saint Catherine holding lilies and a bearded Saint Francis holding a cross, Mary gazes downward. Below, a young Saint John the Baptist reaches up, offering a small bird. Bold shadows highlight their forms, and a block of text occupies the upper left corner.
