Description

This triptych icon was probably commissioned by a lay person for private prayer and meditation. It could be folded and shut when not in use. The scenes represented from left to right are: The Crucifixion (left); The Resurrection and Anastasis (center); and Adoration of the Miracle-Working Icon of the Vladimir Mother of God (right). Small portable icons such as this were common to later Russian religious practice.
A horizontally oriented triptych of three hinged panels features ornate brass frames decorated with blue, white, and green floral enamel. In the left panel, Christ hangs crucified amidst figures with light skin tones. The central scene depicts Christ within a luminous oval of light, lifting figures from tombs. On the right, an assembly of saints stands beneath a small Madonna and Child icon. Gold halos and detailed figures characterize these three darkened religious scenes.
