Description

This triptych icon was probably commissioned by a lay person for private prayer and meditation. It could be folded and shut when not in use. The scenes represented from left to right are: The Crucifixion (left); The Resurrection and Anastasis (center); and Adoration of the Miracle-Working Icon of the Vladimir Mother of God (right). Small portable icons such as this were common to later Russian religious practice.
A vertically oriented, painted wood icon depicts two stacked religious scenes crowded with figures with light skin tones. At the bottom, Christ stands in a golden mandorla over broken gates, pulling a kneeling man from a tomb while a woman in red robes kneels nearby. Above, Christ stands in another golden light surrounded by groups of onlookers. An ornate brass frame with blue, green, and white enamel patterns borders the scenes.
