Description

This is part of a triptych icon and was probably commissioned by a lay person for private prayer and meditation. It could be folded and shut when not in use. The scene represented is the Adoration of the Miracle-Working Icon of the Vladimir Mother of God. Small portable icons such as this were common to later Russian religious practice.
A square-oriented icon painting on a wood panel depicts, in a central upper inset, a gold-haloed Madonna holding a child. Below, a winged archangel in a cream-colored robe stands amidst ten robed saints. All figures have light skin tones and gold halos with red identifying inscriptions. The composition features warm gold, red, and dark green tones, bordered by an ornate metal frame with filigree and white, green, and blue enamel circles.
