Description

After a failed love affair, the daughter-in-law of the king of Banaras returns home to her husband. Her disheveled hair and lack of jewelry support her claims of insanity and hide the evidence of her true whereabouts. The woman is greeted by the king, who sits with one of his attendants. In the chambers above them, a group of women look on in surprise.
A vertically oriented tempera painting depicts two scenes beneath three lines of black script. In the upper, four women with light skin tones peer from white architectural structures against a blue sky. In the lower, a man and woman with light skin tones sit on a yellow floral cushion against a red background. On the right, another woman stands on a green tiled floor, gesturing with one hand toward them.
