The dark halo around Khujasta’s face indicates that her profile has been reshaped.

Description

Tuti the talking parrot begins to tell Khujasta the story of a merchant named Mansur and his encounter with an imposter. Various features of the room, including the pale colors and flat composition are reminiscent of the pre-Akbar painting style.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and ink painting on paper depicts Khujasta, a woman with a medium skin tone, facing left to address a green parrot in a gold cage. She wears a patterned green tunic and blue pants, standing on a green hexagonal floor. Behind her, a pink brick wall meets patterned wallpaper. To our right sits a red patterned bed. Flowing Persian script fills horizontal bands framing the scene above and below.
