The documents before the judge are marked with Arabic script, implying an Islamic context.

Description

When the true merchant Mansur returns home to find an imposter in his place, he takes him to a judge to settle the matter. After testimony of Mansur’s wife, the imposter is revealed. In the image, the real Mansur stands with his wife, addressing the seated judge. Below them, the imposter is led away, turban unraveled, while being beaten with a stick.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and ink painting depicts light-skinned figures in a narrative scene above Persian calligraphy. On the right, a bearded man in an orange robe sits on a platform inside a blue alcove, attended by a youth with a fan. To the left, four figures stand near a leafy tree where a man in a white tunic pulls another's hair against a red wall. Black script covers the lower half.
