Did You Know?

Kamjuy and the Raja touch their index fingers to their mouths in gestures of surprise.

Description

On the left Kamjuy, chief of the Raja’s forty wives, turns away from the bowl of fish and hides her face behind her veil. She claims that it would be sinful to allow any male, even a fish, to see her. To the astonishment of both the Raja and Kamjuy herself, the fish immediately begin to laugh at her assertion.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and ink painting features four lines of black script above a court scene. Below, a man in an orange tunic sits upon a golden throne, gesturing toward a woman in a green patterned skirt. Between them rests a bowl of fish. Against a lavender wall, four attendants with varying skin tones flank the pair; two wave white feathered fans while others stand on ornate blue and red rugs.
