Description

In the upper-left corner, the goldsmith and the carpenter have dinner with their wives and children. The greedy goldsmith has robbed the carpenter who, in revenge, abducts the goldsmith’s sons and replaces them with two bear cubs. Below, the bears rub their faces against the goldsmith’s sleeves, proving to the judge that they must be the man’s transformed children.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and ink painting features an upper narrative scene above five lines of black script. On the right, a man in an orange robe sits on a platform, extending an arm toward two men. To the left, a man holds leashes for two dark-furred animals. Figures with light skin tones congregate within pink-roofed structures in the background. Narrow red and gold borders frame the entire composition.
