Did You Know?

The old woman in yellow is Mahrusa’s duenna, or governess.

Description

In the lower register, a musician, a dancer, and other revelers happily celebrate the wedding. The prefect, dressed in orange, sits on the left of the wedding scene while Mahrusa herself sits on the far right. Mahrusa, who has been rejected by the king, continues to wonder why he refused to marry her.
A book page features Persian script in the upper half and a tempera and ink painting below. Inside an ornate, pillared pavilion, Mahrusa, a woman in orange, sits on a rug with the city prefect, a man in blue, and two others. All have light to medium-light skin tones. Outside on the grass, five more people gather, including a dancer, a drummer, and a man leading a horse on our right.
