Description

The princess of Rum watches anxiously from an upper window as her son is introduced to the enthroned king. In order to hide his identity, she has told her husband that the young man has expert knowledge of precious gemstones. The king, impressed with the slave’s skill, welcomes him into his court.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and ink painting on paper depicts people with light skin tones within a multilevel white building topped with gold domes. In the center, a bearded man in orange sits on a platform, gesturing toward a man in blue and a youth in yellow. An attendant in green stands at left, while a woman in red watches from an upper window. Black script borders the scene above and below.
