Description

Venus, the goddess of love, is unsuccessful in dissuading her mortal lover Adonis from hunting the boar that would eventually kill him. The artist nestles this story in the foreground of an expansive view with Germanic architecture, rather than a classical setting. Woodlands were relatively new subjects in European painting and this work points toward the full-blown forested landscapes of the 1600s.
A horizontally oriented oil painting on copper depicts a verdant landscape with dense dark trees on the left. Beneath the canopy, three figures with light skin tones appear: a man in a red tunic, a woman in a blue gown, and a winged child. To the right, a vast valley stretches toward the horizon with stone buildings and a large castle. Muted greens and blues define the scene beneath cloudy skies where a bird flies.
